What is Stonewashing, and why is it so important to our livable luxury bedding aesthetic?
Stonewashing is a finishing process that happens in the production room. When we stonewash our cotton + linen blankets and coverlets, we use hot water to improve on the product in two important ways:
- Shrink the fibers to their final size, thus preventing further shrinkage
- Enhance the texture for ultra softness and tactility of the fabrication
Allow us to explain with more detail:
When we weave our coverlets and blankets, we start with pre-washed yarns. We program our looms to weave the desired pattern, and then we cut and sew it to a much bigger size than the intended final size.
In that pristine state just off the loom, the fabric is very stiff and, frankly, not yet very interesting. But that just means the fun is about to begin!
Some patterns are brushed, others are calendared – depending on the fabric and desired texture. But every single roll of fabric is carefully inspected on a giant light box by trained technicians who are experts at detecting flaws or irregularities. Our attention to detail is truly unmatched.
Once this step is done, we can begin the stonewashing process – or what we prefer to call, the magic
The result is a right-sized and softer, more relaxed fabric, and a pattern with definition and textural appeal.
In an effort to be fully transparent to you, our valued customers, please note: We know that shrinking isn’t an exact science, so we allow for a 7% variance in the size. But rest assured the final size will not be smaller than the dimensions we advertise.
